Sabbatical 2012

Sally received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Iceland for 5 months starting in January 2012. Luckily, Shan, Alex (age 12), Joslyn (age 9) and Spencer (age 5) can accompany her on this adventure. This blog will allow family and friends to keep up with the trials and tribulations of our escapades in Europe.

Day 130-washing machine

May 13-After the last couple of late nights for all of us, we all slept in this morning.  It felt great!  Since it was extremely windy and rather cold outside today, everyone hung out in the apartment, played with toys, and got various odd jobs taken care of.  The kids brought home Emma and Pálmar's DVD of "Puss in Boots" last night, so we watched it this afternoon as well.
The big news of today is that we now have a washing machine in the apartment!  Emma's brother recently graduated from Bifröst, but left his washing machine in storage in the basement of his old apartment complex when he left.  She had let us know about it a few weeks ago and we had been trying to find the time to get it moved over here ever since.  The people and times finally fell into place today, so now it is installed in the bathroom.  It is rather small, but it should work fine if we run it whenever we get enough dirty clothes of a certain type.  Hopefully, we get to Borgarnes soon so we can buy a drying rack.  Then, there will be no more hauling our laundry over to the other building on a weekly basis!
Now, if we could only get a dishwasher as well.  That will not happen, but we are going to appreciate our dishwasher that much more when we return to the States!
Today was Mother's Day in Iceland and in the U.S.  However, it is not commercialized here like it is in the States, meaning that we did not see window displays or ads in the papers.  Consequently, we did not realize that it was Mother's Day until Shan's sister called on Facetime and mentioned it to us.  Thanks to that friendly reminder, we all contacted our mothers (via Skype, e-mail, or in-person) and wished them well on their day.
