Sabbatical 2012

Sally received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Iceland for 5 months starting in January 2012. Luckily, Shan, Alex (age 12), Joslyn (age 9) and Spencer (age 5) can accompany her on this adventure. This blog will allow family and friends to keep up with the trials and tribulations of our escapades in Europe.

Day 129-socializing

May 12-Spencer spent the night on the couch so Alex and her friends could stay up late watching the movie in the kids' room.  We had told him that he could watch it when he got up in the morning.  A little before 7am, I awoke and found him a little ways into the movie.  Since Spencer had stayed up so late the night before, I told him to put the iPad away and get some more sleep.  Later in the day, Spencer admitted that he had already watched the movie all the way through and that I had caught him on his second viewing.  We figure that he must have gotten up and started watching the movie around 4am.  In his defense, the Sun is up by 4am these days, so he probably figured that it was fine to get up!
Besides doing the laundry and going shopping, most of the day was spent socializing.  Sally made (American) pancakes this morning, so Imba and Kristín could try them.  She then left around noon to go to Borgarnes to shop and to pick up Joslyn and Águsta.  When she got there, Signý invited her in for coffee, and they ended up sitting around talking for an hour.  Joslyn had a very nice time at the party and was bummed that she had to leave.  Erla had opened presents the night before and they had spent the rest of the evening playing around, watching a couple of movies, and eating mini-pizzas and chocolate fondue for supper.  They got to bed around 12:30 am.  They had American pancakes for breakfast this morning and then painted "summery" pictures on some small canvasses.  After going on a treasure hunt for sea shells outside, they frosted two cakes and then did some fashion shows with a bunch of old clothes that Signý and Maggi had collected.  They had more mini-pizzas for dinner and ate the cakes they had frosted and another cake that Signý had decorated to look like a pink iPod.
I went over to Gaui and Magga's to tell them that Sally had left to get Águsta, who is their daughter.  Magga was making pancakes (we would call them crépes) when I arrived and invited me in for coffee.  I accepted and ended up having some of the pancakes as well when Gaui came home.  Magga recently became the leader of the local chapter of the Red Cross.  Due to financial issues, the chapter needed to move its supplies to a smaller store in Borgarnes, so she was making the pancakes to take to Borgarnes to feed the people who were going to help with the move.
Kristín, Imba, and Alex.
Imba and Kristín stayed at the house most of the day.  They and Alex let Spencer tag along with them for the most part today, which was very nice.  It rained off and on, so they all played on the trampoline some and watched the movie a couple more times while inside as well.  Their mothers went shopping in Reykjavík today and came to get them around 6:30 pm.  Since the girls had just sat down to eat some hot dogs, we invited their mothers in for some coffee and we got to visit with them for half an hour.
After they left, Sally threw together a dessert and we headed over to Emma and Pálmar's for supper.  Emma had made pulled pork sandwiches with an Iclelandic twist of vegetables and black pepper cream cheese.  It was very tasty and Sally's meringue cake concoction topped off the fantastic feast.  We had a great time visiting with them and playing Settlers of Catan as well.  The kids played with their four-year old son, Þorsteinn, and then spent some time watching a couple of their kids' movies.  We finally headed home to hit the sack at midnight.
