Sabbatical 2012

Sally received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Iceland for 5 months starting in January 2012. Luckily, Shan, Alex (age 12), Joslyn (age 9) and Spencer (age 5) can accompany her on this adventure. This blog will allow family and friends to keep up with the trials and tribulations of our escapades in Europe.

Day 121-summer tires

May 4-Sally taught class this morning and we got around to head for Reykjavík.  We picked up Spencer, got the girls out of school a little early, and stopped in Borgarnes to run a couple errands.  Then, we headed to Hafnarfjörður in southern Reykjavík so the car rental agency could change the oil and replace the studded tires with summer tires on our car.  I guess winter really must be behind us!  While this work was being done, the lady in charge gave us keys to another car, so we drove to a small shopping mall a short distance away to get some coffee and dessert and so the kids could do a little window shopping.  Sally purchased an owl necklace that is similar to the necklaces a few of our friends have worn. With the car all ready to go for the rest of the time we are here, we headed off to do our last bit of shopping.  We stopped at the Vínbúðin at Heiðrun to buy some good beer and at a game shop in Skeifan to just do some looking.  We ended up finding a logic game that Joslyn liked, so we bought it.
With all of our errands and shopping finally completed, we headed downtown to Pam and Marilyn's apartment.  They had previously invited us to spend the night when we next found ourselves in town.  Since we needed to spend the night in town, we decided to finally take them up on the offer.  We were very pleased with our decision.  Marilyn cooked us a fantastic meal and we sat around and visited while the kids played Joslyn's new game and read books on the Kindles.  Finally, we put the kids to bed.  The adults drank some more wine and talked a little more and then we hit the sack as well.
