Sabbatical 2012

Sally received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Iceland for 5 months starting in January 2012. Luckily, Shan, Alex (age 12), Joslyn (age 9) and Spencer (age 5) can accompany her on this adventure. This blog will allow family and friends to keep up with the trials and tribulations of our escapades in Europe.

Day 94-the Hayses and Fritzes leave

Norm, Misty, and Skógafoss.
April 7-We packed up and left Miðhvoll with a sense of urgency today.  The consensus decision was that the kids needed to go swimming one last time in Iceland, so we needed to get to a pool in Reykjavík quickly so they would have time to do so.  We got onto the Ring Road and made a beeline for the capital, only stopping briefly at the Skógafoss waterfall so our visitors could fit in one last Icelandic waterfall.
We dropped off Sally, Misty, and kids at the Árbæjarlaug swimming pool in Reykjavík and the rest of us drove over to Pam and Marilyn's to pick up the bags we had left there the week before.  Since we were downtown at that point, we had dinner there and Diane finally got the chance to go shopping at the Little Christmas Shop.  Afterwards, we drove back out to the swimming pool and then straight out to the Keflavík airport.
Thankfully, Iceland is not as neurotic as the U.S. is about airport security, so we could park the van on the curb mere feet from the terminal and unload the bags and people at a leisurely pace.  We returned the van and everyone checked in.  There was practically no line at the check-in counter, so we got it all done with plenty of time to spare. We all grabbed a light snack at the airport café, sat down, and relaxed.  We all said our good-byes and the Hayses and Fritzes headed off.
After we had seen them off safely, we drove back into Reykjavík, where we ate supper and did some food shopping in anticipation of stores being closed for the next two days.  We drove back home to Bifröst, unpacked the car, put our stuff away, and decompressed.
Overall, I think that the Hayses and Fritzes enjoyed their visit and their time in Iceland.  It is always more difficult to get larger groups of people moving, but we managed to get to a number of places and see quite a bit.  As is usually the case when you put together groups of people who have different set routines, there is going to be occasional issues that need to be worked out.  For the most part, though, people kept their cool, adjusted to the circumstances, and got along well.  In any event, we were certainly glad that they made the trip over here and we enjoyed their visit a great deal.
