Sabbatical 2012

Sally received a Fulbright Fellowship to teach and conduct research in Iceland for 5 months starting in January 2012. Luckily, Shan, Alex (age 12), Joslyn (age 9) and Spencer (age 5) can accompany her on this adventure. This blog will allow family and friends to keep up with the trials and tribulations of our escapades in Europe.

Day 185-starting to wind things down

July 7-After the late night, we all slept in this morning.  Once we were all up and active, we took our first steps to close out this chapter of our lives.  Sally’s folks will be visiting us soon, and we are planning to send back some of our stuff with them, so we began to pack up clothes and things that we will not need the last week or two in Iceland.  It was an odd activity for everyone and also a little sad, since it made everyone realize that our remaining time here is rather short.  We spent most of the rest of the day getting other chores done, like posting to the blog, cleaning the house, and doing the laundry.  Sally also had an issue come up with the camper van she had rented for her folks and spent some time trying to get it solved.
Shan replaced the rear tube in Spencer’s bike with the one he bought yesterday.  The prior owners had skimped by putting a 16” tube into a 14” tire.  The oversized tube had to fold back on itself, and the resulting kink developed a hole.  Shan tried to patch it once, but it did not last long and Spencer’s tire would only stay aired up 15 minutes, which limited his ability to take long bike rides.  Since today was a Saturday, Shan could not access the workshop on campus, but he managed to remove the wheel with a rusty pair of pliers he found on the ground a couple months ago and had oiled and made semi-usable in the workshop.  It was not perfect, but it allowed him to get the job done; not quite a full-on MacGyver, but close enough to make Shan happy.  To test the tire, Spencer joined the girls on a bike ride down to Hreðavatn.  Since this is a rather hilly road, it was good to see that he could make it without too much difficulty.
